Serving up the most quintessential Independence Day scares, we reignite an annual tradition with this dangerous dyad, bringing back an old favorite complemented by a newcomer to shake things up.
At 8PM, let’s take a trip to the town of Southport, North Carolina- where we meet a group of friends celebrating an end of an era and looking forward to new, exciting chapters before taking a turn for the worst, with an innocent night of partying devolving into a deadly hit and run. A year after evading consequences, an ominous letter is delivered- and the sender knows what they did last summer- and intends to make them pay in blood.
This 90’s whodunnit slasher is a 4th of July must- penned by Kevin Williamson himself and featuring beloved scream queen, and lead of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar- don’t let this classic stand in the shadows of Scream any longer. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997) probes a study of guilt and accountability, plummeting audiences into a cinematic purgatory where the past comes back for penance, analyzing the ever-changing nature of interpersonal relations through trials and tribulations. Loosely based off of a mystery novel by Lois Duncan, and inspired by The Hook urban legend, viewers are in for a treat.
Then, at 10PM, we visit the coastal community of Claridge, Maryland for their annual 4th of July bash when a deadly epidemic unleashed by a waterborne parasite ravages their home with bloodshed and fatalities aplenty. Plunge into THE BAY (2012) and bask in the brutality of Mother Nature’s vengeance, grounding the horror in reality with scientific support, dramatizing facts into a “what-if” scenario, calling attention to the rampant pollution of the Chesapeake shores. Steered by Academy-Award winning director Barry Levinson, The Bay merges ecological horror with a healthy dose of body horror through the vehicle of a mixed media mokumentary, showcasing various perspectives among the residents, while approximately 85% of the film takes root in truths pertaining to the toxicity brought on by mankind’s mistreatment of the earth. This underrated entry provides a unique perspective into the sub-genre, boasting gnarly special effects of a predominantly practical essence to depict the gruesome flesh eating optics, exposing government cover-ups and the ramifications of environmental neglect. With a hint of Korea’s Host (2006), The Bay illuminates classism among the bureaucracy-critiquing the lengths institutions will go in order to enhance their avarice at the expense of public safety.
